A Little Hair Journey Motivation

Ninety percent of all emails I receive express, in one way or another, the following sentiment:

"I'm doing everything right but I'm not making any progress!"

I know it can be frustrating. When you put time and effort into something, it can be discouraging when you are not seeing results.

Here are a few tips to help you stay committed on your journey AND keep your sanity!

1) Come Up with a Simple Plan

Just come up with a simple, easy regimen. Wash, condition, style.

Save the steaming treatments, protein paks, and new styling techniques for days in which you have some time to spare. Don't put so much pressure on yourself!

Keep it simple and easy!

2) Make It a Habit

How do you make something a habit?

Well, think about all of the things you do everyday. We all wake up in the morning and head to the bathroom. To do what? Brush our teeth and wash our face. We've been doing this everyday for years. It's the first thing we do when we wake up and the last thing we do before bed.

So, what makes brushing our teeth and washing our face a habit?

1) Consistency. We do it the same time each and every day. It has a place in our daily schedule.
2) Discipline. Unless we want cavities and blemishes, we know that the extra 5 minutes it takes to brush our teeth and wash our face are worth it.

So, in order to make washing, conditioning and styling our hair a habit, we have to focus on consistency and discipline. Pick one or two days out of the week and commit it to "hair time". Be consistent and discplined about your regimen and you will reap the rewards.

3) Forget About It!

A watched pot never boils. So, come up with a plan, make it a habit and then....FORGET about it.

Take up a new hobby, focus on work, school, etc. The point is to channel your energy into something else. The work and discipline you are putting into your hair will compound and one day, when you least expect it, a few hairs will graze your goal length and you will know that all of the hard work was worth it.

People usually tell me when my hair is getting longer. I really don't pay attention to it. I've just developed the habit of washing, conditioning and setting it weekly. I literally forget about it. And, because I'm not anxious about it, it just grows and grows.

Summary

Having healthy hair is not about "product" or "styling tools".

It's also not about growth potions and creams.

Like everything else in life - healthy relationships, healthy careers, healthy bodies - healthy hair is all about developing good habits, having discipline and understanding the importance (and beauty) of good old fashioned delayed gratification.

So, come up with a plan, put into action and reap the rewards. It may take time but it will be worth it. Trust me :)
